Kenya Missions Update

April 5, 2005

Greetings in the precious name of the Lord, Jesus the Christ!

Kaimosi

Sunday, April 3rd, we attended the cluster meeting for the Kaimosi Area churches. These are the churches that by the grace of God, I and others with me were able to start. We arrived at 10:30 AM and found them on the path to the river. Before church 8 people were baptized. Praise the Lord! That is what it is all about, Christians teaching others about salvation through Christ!

It was a hot day there as well. Before I preached, Kirsten looked at my hair and said, "Daddy, you are sweating!" Well, that didn’t stop the preacher from going on for (four American sermons). Church finally concluded at 3:30 PM. The sermon was on Sit, Walk and Stand from the book of Ephesians. We visited and ate and finally got home around 6 PM.

From the Previous Newsletter

Francis Yator visited us one day and brought a rooster as a thanksgiving gift for helping him. He also brought wonderful news. In fact the man from the Ministry of Agriculture did come back to visit his vegetable garden. He came with 30 other people. They stayed for 3 hours and talked about vegetable raising. Also, the youth in the church at Kabamoi are getting the vision of projects. They are dreaming of vegetables, chickens and other projects. Praise the Lord!

Dr. John Maxwell

Many of you might know him by the books that he has written in the area of Leadership. He has a program called, "Million Leaders Mandate". The plan is to come to Kenya and other areas of the world to develop leadership in the church. This was the third of six visits that he or his staff will make to Kenya, with Eldoret being one of the teaching points. Last Friday and Saturday, I attended this meeting. In attendance was over 200 people from over 70 different religious groups. Some traveled quite a distance to come, the furthest away was from Kisii, 120 miles away. Each person is given 25 copies of the booklet and asked to go and teach 25 other church leaders about ‘qualities’ of a leader’. The lessons that we studied this time were in the areas of:

Leadership Begins with an Attitude (Leaders think and perceive the world differently than followers do)

The Leaders’ Inner circle (Building a healthy network of relationships)

Christ, the Great Communicator (Improving your communication skills by imitating the master)

Leading When Times are Tough (Handling difficult people and situations)

The Five Levels of Leadership (A look at why people follow their leaders)

The Art of the Basin and the Towel (Developing the qualities of a servant leader)

We also discussed the fact that a leader needs to develop in five areas of their life. Spiritually, mentally, relationally, physically and financially (having a plan).

Kirsten & Ruth Korner

The big news around here is the upcoming birthday of Kirsten. She told me last night that she has waited all of her life to become 7 years old. That event will take place on Saturday. The plans are still developing for her party, but if she has her way everyone she knows in Kenya will be there. Got to be a bit careful, Ruth’s is next month and what happens for one will have to happen for the other!

They also have completed the first term of school and are on holiday until May 3rd. So, they very busy in the outside play activities and also it is amazing to see that they are really enjoying inside games, coloring, drawing and looking at books. Kirsten is able to read some words and is waiting for the day that she can read books all by herself. So, we are trying to read to them during this holiday break. Also hoping to work on scripture memorization.

Prayer Requests

  • pray for us as we develop in our lives (spiritually, mentally, relationally, physically and financially)
  • there are signs of rain, pray that the clouds will bless us instead of passing overhead
  • Kenya, we are improving. We are now 17th instead of 11th on the list of corrupt nations. Pray that the leaders will concentrate on improving the country instead of fighting among themselves and being political before the next elections in 2007.
  • Our trip to Nairobi around the 20th of April. Especially to find favor with the powers-to-be about getting my Alien Registration Card
  • The dates for me teaching ‘How to Study’ the Bible at Mafuta area extension school is 15 – 17th of April.

Because of the Love of Christ,

Keith, Grace, Kirsten and Ruth Gafner
