Kenya Missions Update

July 6, 2007

Greetings in the Name of Jesus!

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”   2 Chronicles 7:14  This is the theme of the letters that I send to the churches every 2 or 3 months.  We are now concentrating on ‘humbling ourselves and prayer’.

26 – 28th July, 18 of us went to the Navillus church once again.   It was a three day period of praying and fasting for the Churches of Christ.   For a few it was their first time to fast.  The fast was broken with a meal.  Then some of them who rode their bikes had to hurry and ride home before the rain clouds dropped their load.   I know Jeremiah had to ride about 28 Kilometers or about 17 miles home.

I received an SMS on my cell phone after the meeting.  Here is the message.  “Greetings to u and ur family in the name of the Lord.  There is healing in the house of the lord. I was heal during fasting and praying praise the Lord.” Clement Maiyo  I called him and asked how he was healed.  He said that before he went to the meeting, he had pains in his joints and now the pain is all gone.

While we were at the coast, we talked with Gene Morden, who is a missionary with CMF in Turkana.  They have been involved in putting in wells so that the Turkana people may have clean water for drinking.  Also as a part of the program, they also have little gardens by the wells.   (The water is pumped out of the wells either by hand pump or by a solar pump).  Each family plants at present in their garden sorghum and cowpeas.  It seems that is the crops that they know to raise up there.  Traditionally, when the river flooded, they would quickly plant these two, as they could get a yield from these quick yielding plants.   Gene is wanting to introduce other plants into their diets as well.  So, on their way home, we loaded him up with knowledge and seeds and plants to go home and try.

Gene was telling us that there is a lot of relief food that goes to this area every year.   In years when there is no rain, the families may only eat one meal a day.  Sometimes they will only eat a meal every two days.   With the water wells and gardens, it is hoped to improve this situation.   He said that before when he first came to this area, it was depressing, you only saw people sitting under the trees out of the hot sun playing a game on the ground, using camel dung as balls (or marbles).  They have few stones in the area, I guess.

Gene also told us that the Turkana church leaders decided to call a Fast for three days.  Their specific prayer request was for witchdoctors to come to know the Lord.  During the fast, one came and repented.  And shortly after the fast, 4 others gave their lives to Christ! Praise the Lord!

We had a wonderful time on the coast.  It was not as warm as expected, but the ocean and swimming pool at the hotel were nice.  The girls used every opportunity they could to be in either of them.  The two men who spoke to us did wonderful jobs.  The Books of the Bible studied were, Song of Songs and Ecclesiates.  They showed us how we could use these books in teaching, books which are not normally preached about.

Kirsten and Ruth Korner
Last time I reported about ‘Cup of the Week’ at school.  Ruth was the proud owner of it the week of July 30th.   She got it for RESPONSIBILITY!  The girls are on school holiday for the month of August.  They are looking forward to the break. Nothing big planned for the month, except one or two days to go to Kitale and be with the orphans at the Kenya Church of Christ Children’s home.
Here is a song that creative Kirsten made up, hope you will enjoy it!

THE FAITHFUL CHURCH
A little church of no renown
Stands on a country road;
Faithfully God’s people come
To hear the truth that’s told.
Year by year the word goes out
Without great pomp or show,
But with concern that those who hear
In faith might stronger grow.
This little church of no renown
Stands faithful to God’s name;
Though small on earth, ‘twill one day stand
In God’s own “Hall of Fame”

Prayers

  1. 24 – 26 August will be the Annual Leaders/Elders meeting here in Eldoret for our mission area. Pray for the meeting as we are expecting 70 -100 leaders to be in attendance. Topic will be on Giving and Unity. David Kibet Kemboi and I are putting together a booklet to be discussed on the subject of ‘giving’ for this meeting. Please pray for this as we get it together and discuss it. Giving has not been a strong part of our Christian’s faith here. We hope that with good scriptural teachings and discussions, this might change.
  2. Praise and thanks for the finances that the Lord provides to help our ministry.
  3. Future students to attend the Nairobi Great Commission School Extension Program to start at Saroiyot. And for provision from the Lord so that we might be able to put electricity at the facility. Last day for interviews is 7th Sept. and the first two classes will be from 17th – 28th Sept. Sammy Kibet and I will teach these first two classes.
  4. Pray with us for the seeds that we sent with Gene to Turkana, that they will make a difference in the lives of the Turkana peoples.
  5. All of us would really believe in and practice the spiritual disciplines of Fasting/Prayer
  6. Hilton Merritt, his wife and Mary Waller will be with us until the 8th August. Hilton is a former missionary in Kenya. Also, it is his father-in-law who taught me and baptized me in 1978.
